Fasting During Navratri and Your Oral Health: Simple Tips for a Fresh Mouth

Many families fast during Navratri and other festivals. Fasting is a personal and spiritual practice, and with a few small habits you can keep your mouth healthy at the same time. What fasting does to your mouth When you eat and drink less, your mouth makes less saliva. Saliva rinses away food and bacteria, so a drier mouth can lead to: • Bad breath, which many people notice during long fasts • A dry or sticky feeling and a coated tongue

• A higher chance of cavities and gum irritation if brushing is skipped

Simple habits for a healthier mouth

• Brush before you begin and after you break the fast. Use fluoride toothpaste, and brush gently for two minutes.

• Clean your tongue every day. A tongue cleaner removes the coating that causes much of the odour.

• Drink plenty of water whenever your fast permits. Sip through the permitted hours rather than gulping at once.

• Be mindful of how you break the fast. Fruit, makhana, curd and nuts are better for teeth than a stream of sweet snacks and fried items. If you do have sweets, have them in one sitting rather than all day.

• Watch sugary drinks. Sweet lassi, tea with extra sugar and packaged juices expose teeth to sugar again and again.

• Use sugar-free gum or a mouth rinse if your fasting rules allow, to freshen breath and help saliva flow.

If you have diabetes or take regular medicines

Please talk to your doctor about fasting safely and do not skip prescribed medicines. Dry mouth and gum problems can be more troublesome in people with diabetes, so keep up with your dental check-ups.

When to see a dentist

See a dentist if bad breath does not go away after good brushing and tongue cleaning, if your gums bleed, or if you have a persistent sore, pain or sensitivity. These may be signs of a problem that needs treatment.
